Artist Ellen Vroegh almost fell from her chair when she was called up yesterday by Huizen municipality. Because several Muslim men had complained about her abstract paintings of half-naked women, the pieces had been removed from the municipality building where they had been displayed.
Vroegh: I feel severely discriminated! this passes all bounds. Must Dutch men now integrate in their own country? After the Nekschot affair, now you get this. Soon art will land up at the stage.”
She says she’s completely puzzled that the municipality ditched her after several people with objections didn’t like the sight.
Vroegh says it’s beyond imagination. If it would be porno.. but it’s about figurative art, where the gender areas can’t be seen. Only two breasts and wood as vagina.
Yesterday afternoon the municipality decided to remove the pictures from the public hall, and to hang them in one of the corridors around the waiting area. “We respect voices from society, regardless of which religious convictions people take offense to these naked women,” said a municipality spokesperson.
