JEDDAH: A 41-year-old British woman has taken refuge at the family protection center in Jeddah following a dispute with her husband, who is also British, Al-Watan daily reported yesterday. The woman, named Elizabeth, accuses her husband of torturing her. She wanted him to divorce her and send her back to Britain, the paper said, adding that the British Embassy refused to intervene in the case.
Dr. Hussein Al-Sharief, director of the Society for the Protection of Family From Violence, said his organization would assist the woman to get a divorce and return to her country. Both Elizabeth and her husband are Muslims. An official source at the British Embassy told the Arabic daily that it would not intervene in personal affairs of citizens. “We’ll only advise them on how to settle their issues by providing them with names of lawyers and agencies they can approach.” Elizabeth is one of the 104 women currently residing at the family protection center run by the society. “About 30 percent of them are foreigners,” said Lafi Al-Balawi, a society official. |
