A unprecedented step to a complete press freedom in UAE (We will have to see if this is true. We must monitor to see if women, and activists can actually talk about human and womn’e rights abuses. Can women write freely in the UAE? This is DAWA and propaganda)
UAE set to exclude prison for journalists
Draft media law excludes prison for journalists found guilty of defamation, other media offences.
ABU DHABI – A draft press law adopted by a ministerial committee in the United Arab Emirates excludes jail terms for journalists found guilty of defamation or other media offences, an official said on Monday.
The bill, which envisages fines as punishment for such offences, has to be accepted by the Emirates consultative council and then signed by the UAE president to become law.
Under the draft, journalists can face fines of up to 100,000 dirhams (27,000 dollars), with publications found guilty of offences possibly being fined up to one million dirhams (270,000 dollars).
Last September, Dubai’s emir Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashed al-Maktoum decreed that journalists should no longer be sentenced to prison terms for carrying out their professional duties.
He was reacting to prison sentences being imposed on two journalists, an Indian and an Egyptian, who had been found guilty of defamation.
