Demonized, Successful UK Shari`ah

“For the past 24 year we have decided for more than 7000 cases of divorce and marriage only,” Hasan, of the Islamic Shari`ah Council, told IOL.

CAIRO — British Muslim Minister Sadiq Khan’s criticism of Shari`ah courts in the European country have upset scholars and Muslim community activists for demonizing an institution that has proven successful in solving the community’s legal disputes over the past decades.

“I think Khan did not realize the nature of the Islamic Shari`ah courts,” Sheikh Suhaib Hasan, secretary-general of the London-based Islamic Shari`ah Council, told IslamOnline.net in a telephone interview.

MP Khan, the newly-appointed minister for community cohesion, criticized on Sunday, October 12, Shari`ah courts working across Britain.

“I would be very concerned about Shari`ah courts applying in the UK,” he said in an interview with the Sunday Times, insisting that Muslims have not matured liked British Jews who have their own separate legal system.

“At some stage in the future I do not rule out the possibility that the Muslim diaspora in this country may be advanced enough. But now is not the right time.”
