An example of the impact of Jihad on business and commerce
On Shariah Finance Watch, we tend to focus on the nuts and bolts of Shariah-Compliant Finance. Sometimes we lose sight of the fact that the aim of Jihad is the imposition of Shariah, just as the aim of Shariah Finance is the promotion of Shariah by other means.
On rare occasions the two worlds merge.
This has happened in a way in the Philippines. For those of you who may not be aware, a Jihadist insurgency has been raging on the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines for years now. Over the past several days, Jihadists believed to be associated with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and/or Jemaah Islamiyah (an Al Qaeda affiliate) have carried out a series of bomb attacks, including at least one on a Catholic cathedral.
